Question by duffey: What credit card is the most universally accepted?
I’ve gone places where they won’t accept American Express or they won’t accept Visa, etc. What’s the most universally accepted credit card in the world (i.e., mastercard, visa, discover, american express, etc.)?

  10. I live in Canada. Here the most popular are VISA and MASTERCARD. A Hotel restaraunt I patronize says American Express takes over a month to process and credit the Vendors account and this messes up the Restaraunts bookeeping.Discover is not that popular here.

  12. In my experience, Mastercards are most accepted. I know that the state colleges in California no longer take Visa because Visa charges them. I also know that Discover and American Express charge companies more to run them, so although the cards have better rewards for card holders, they don’t do businesses any favors. I personally have never been turned down with my Mastercard.

  14. I have travelled lots, in Africa, Europe, Asia and the USA and have found that Mastercard seems to be the widest accepted and easiest to use. Visa is a close second.

Amex and Diners is not accepted in many restaurants and other places throughout Africa and Europe.

If your going to be travelling and staying in international hotels then most of the well known credit cards can be used no problem. But as soon as your off the beaten track its Mastercard.

  16. What I’ve found is that if they accept credit cards at all, a Visa or Mastercard is accepted. Discover, American Express, etc. are much more hit and miss. I’ve traveled through the US, Europe, and Asia. As long as credit cards are accepted, one of those two will do the trick.

  20. In the US – Visa, definitely.

Over the world – pretty much the same, almost everyone accepts visa these days. People who don’t want to accept visa, in most of the cases, just want debit (or check cards), not credit cards. But, there might be some countries where Visa has a problem, YMMV, I’ve never heard of that.

In the ATM world, look for the Cyrus icon, it’s the most internationally acceptable.

In general, when traveling internationally, get a few different cards (different visas, mastercards and stuff), and don’t forget to phone the credit card companies and tell them you’ll be using the card overseas, otherwise their anti-fraud software might block it. Also, in some countries, you don’t want to use credit cards at all, or excercise extra caution if you do, due to the credit card fraud.
